DyeStat Discussions - EP676 - Amy Cashin and Ceili McCabe
Published by
Amy Cashin and Ceili McCabe, both women's 3,000-meter steeplechase national champions from West Virginia representing Australia and Canada respectively, join DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss both competing July 16 at the World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Cashin, 27, is an assistant coach and former NCAA Division 1 indoor and outdoor finalist for West Virginia who has the opportunity to represent Australia at the Olympics, World Championships and Commonwealth Games in a span of 53 weeks. McCabe, 20, is an All-American in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track for the Mountaineers who captured her first senior level title June 24 with a personal-best 9:30.69 at the Bell Canadian Track and Field Championships in Langley, British Columbia. Cashin reflects on achieving a lifetime-best 9:27.91 on June 10 to win at the Portland Track Festival, then being able to watch McCabe take third June 11 in 9:31.14 at the Division 1 final at Hayward Field in Eugene. Both athletes speak about having three competitors from their respective countries qualifying for the World Championships, with Regan Yee and Oregon State's Grace Fetherstonhaugh racing for Canada, along with Brielle Erbacher and Cara Feain-Ryan representing Australia. Cashin revisits her Olympic debut in Tokyo and running 9:34.67 in the opening round and the motivation that experience provided entering this year. McCabe shares how valuable it has been to not only train with Cashin, but also learn about racing in elite international competitions. They speak about the potential to race in the same first-round heat, versus being able to support each other in separate qualifying sections, and the ambition to both advance to the final after Genevieve Gregson has represented Australia and Genevieve Lalonde has participated for Canada in the 3,000 steeplechase at the past three World Championships. Cashin also looks forward to making her Commonwealth Games debut at the meet Aug. 2-7 in Birmingham, England, with McCabe expected to not attend to shift her focus toward preparing for the fall cross country season.
