Ceili McCabe, a redshirt junior at West Virginia and the two-time Big 12 Conference cross country champion as well as an NCAA Division 1 All-American in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track who represented Canada at the World Athletics Championships in July at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing Nov. 19 at the Division 1 final at the Greiner Family Course at Oklahoma State in Stillwater. McCabe took third last year at the NCAA cross country championship at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla., and is unbeaten this season in four competitions, including the Mid-Atlantic Regional final Nov. 11 at Penn State. She explains how meaningful it is to have her teammates qualify as well, with West Virginia placing second in the regional behind Georgetown to secure the 11th NCAA championship berth in program history. McCabe analyzes her previous opportunities to compete at the Greiner Family Course, finishing 42nd in 21:01.2 at the Division 1 final in Stillwater in March 2021, then winning the Big 12 crown in October 2021 by clocking 20:44.2 on the same 6-kilometer layout. She examines the approach of West Virginia coach Sean Cleary to not compete during the regular season at Oklahoma State, in addition to the decision not to return Oct. 14 to the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, instead racing at Penn State in preparation for the regional competition. McCabe reflects on victories by Canadian female athletes Angela Chalmers of Northern Arizona in 1986 and Sheila Reid from Villanova in 2010-11 at the NCAA cross country final and how significant it would be to join them as the Division 1 champion. She also revisits her opportunity to represent Canada in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the World Athletics Championships and her inspiration to qualify again in 2023 to race in Hungary, as well as the 2024 Olympics in Paris. McCabe shares how West Virginia has dedicated its season to Petal Palmer, who has been battling leukemia, wearing a ribbon that she clutched as she crossed the finish line at the Big 12 final in Lubbock, Texas.
